Linux

Linux is an open-source operating system. An operating system is a software which manages the hardware system of laptops and desktops. Operating System (OS) is a communication channel between the software and hardware of a computer. Linux OS, developed by Linus Torvalds is a freely distributable, cross-platform operating system based on UNIX that can be installed on PCs, laptops, netbooks, mobile phones and tablets, video gaming consoles, supercomputers etc.

Linux is free to obtain and can be installed on any number of computers, without paying a single rupee. You don’t have to buy the license for Linux as many of its software’s come with GNU General Public License. Other OS’s generally have a hefty fee and sometimes even a recurring fee. 

Open Source

One of the major advantages of Linux is that it is an Open Source operating system. Its source code is easily available for everyone. Any person who is capable of coding can modify, enhance and distribute the code to anyone.

Flexibility

Linux is considered to be one of the most flexible OS. It can be used for high performance server applications, desktop applications, etc. A user can install only the required components for a particular use. Or s/he can also restrict the use of specific computers.

Security

Linux is one of the most secure operating systems. Through features like file ownership and permissions Linux is considered very secure.

Stability

Compared to other operating systems Linux has very high stability. The performance level is very good and it does not require rebooting very often. It rarely freezes up or slows down.

Linux provides various advantages over other OS and that is one of the main reasons as to why it is used in most of the fields these days. Linux is considered flexible, scalable and robust operating system. It is suitable not only for programming but has other uses as well.
